Is "Customer Only" parking enforceable?

KTRK-13’s Jeff Ehling got to the bottom of a question many of us have: what happens if you park in a “Customer Only” parking space and you aren’t patronizing that particular business:

Towing signs dot the landscape in Rice Village. From the Walgreen’s to the furniture store, it seems every business is trying to keep its parking lot clear for customers only. The intimidation factor is enough to keep Linda Leon from parking in front of a dry cleaners.

“They might tow my car,” she told us.

In fact, anyone can park there or in front of the furniture store, or in the Walgreen’s parking lot because the tow warning signs look nothing like the legally required towing sign.

“It has to be the red and white sign with the universal tow symbol saying unauthorized vehicles will be towed away,” said Jeanette Rash with the Texas Towing and Storage Association.

Rash knows about towing regulations. After all, she owns a towing service and is member of the Texas Towing and Storage Association.

“It has the universal tow symbol on it — towing enforced, unauthorized vehicles will be towed at owner’s or operator’s expense; towing enforced at all times and a 24 hour phone number,” she said.

His story includes more on what happens if you do get towed.

Now we know. Thanks, Jeff!
