News and views from around the web

[WB1] Earlier in the week, HPD Chief Art Acevedo noted that the reward for information about missing Maleah Davis had been increased, adding that he believes that Derion Vence (now in custody, although initial media reports indicated he was not even a person of interest in the case) knows more about her disappearance than he has shared.

Acevedo and other local authorities still refuse to say anything about HPD’s 7815 Harding St. Massacre.

[WB2] As noted by KHOU-11 news, Maleah Davis is one of 58 Houston-area children who are missing. HPD needs to do better.

[WB3] KPRC-2’s Joel Eisenbaum reports that Houston Fire Department response times have been slipping in recent years, and are now below national averages – just more confirmation that Mayor Turner’s plans to cut HFD resources even further before his recent court “victory” was irresponsible.

Maybe it’s time to check in on HPD response times now?

[WB4] Earlier in the week, the Houston Fire Department called on Mayor Turner to commit to binding arbitration to resolve the ongoing salary issue (an approach that mayoral candidate Bill King has endorsed). Mayor Turner said no.

[WB5] The City is planning to build a new hike and bike trail… right by a stinky landfill and other remote commercial properties. KTRK-13’s Ted Oberg has more.

[WB6] “THIS is what’s wrong with politics. Hero worship and God building” (Cory Crow on doting Turner aides and their tweets)

[WB7] Daniel Albert, the highly paid chief of staff to Councilmember Steve Le, was placed on administrative leave this week while the Office of Inspector General looks into his seemingly fraudulent behavior. While fellow Councilmember Greg Travis has criticized Albert’s behavior and urged his termination, Le seems more inclined to retain and defend his staffer.

[WB8] The Texas Observer seems a little surprised that mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee is a major sponsor of a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton (despite also supporting Donald Trump). Closer to home, Buzbee donated nearly $100,000 to the Harris County Democratic Party in support of their sweep of every county judicial race in 2018.

Please remember our lost ones on this Memorial Day Weekend (and be safe).
