Chron.com, the Houston Chronicle’s free news/listicle/photo gallery site, ran a story a few days ago about the death of former KHOU news director and anchor Dick John.
The post did not actually report his age, but it DID include a photo gallery of Houston-area TV journalists to click through — departure from TV gigs and departure from LIFE apparently being close enough to the same thing for the chron.com crew/editors:
There’s apparently never a bad time for a struggling newspaper with declining ad revenue to post an insipid, click-generating photo gallery!
Classy, Houston Chronicle.
UPDATE (01/27/2014): It appears that the Mike McGuff blog was ahead of chron.com, with a much better obituary (and no tacky unrelated photo gallery).
Leave it to the Mike McGuff blog to get it right.
When I saw the article, I was not sure whether the Chronicle was trying to increase hits to its article by mentioning all Houston-area journalists (since many track online mentions of their names) or there had been a massive die-off of Houston-area journalists during the “great freeze of 24 January 2014.”
