This weekend, grab some Christmas spirit

When I was young, I remember how traffic would build after sundown in our Glenbrook Valley – Hobby Airport area. All the neighborhoods participated in the annual Christmas home and yard decorating contests. They jockied to be the best and to wow all kids from 6 to 60. Every yard had something, even if it was only a tree in the window and a few lights. But some, well, those folks went crazy. They would install huge mechanical displays and thousands upon thousands of lights. The Cowboy Santa riding the bucking horse in one of the front bay windows had to be the biggest draw–hands down. It would take a half hour to get past that one house. Traffic crawled but that was okay, all the better to ooh and ahh over the thousands of lights, ornaments, and creative landscapes.

This year Lights in the Heights beckons Houstonians to the Woodland Heights for “side street entertainment, music, and food.” But it’s only for one night, tomorrow, (Saturday, December 9) from 6 PM
